Golden Globe nominees

The Golden Globe nominees for 2016 landed this morning. Leading the pack was (surprise, surprise) La La Land with seven, followed closely by fellow frontrunner Moonlight with six.

Let's take a looksee at what else the HFPA liked, plus some quick takes...

MOTION PICTURE DRAMA
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
Can't endorse Hacksaw's inclusion here, though it always felt easily like a Globes movies. The other four, however, are all fine selections.

MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
20th Century Women
Deadpool
La La Land
Florence Foster Jenkins
Sing Street
Pretty obvious win for La La Land.

DIRECTOR
Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Two of these don't belong.

ACTRESS DRAMA
Amy Adams, Arrival
Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Ruth Negga, Loving
Natalie Portman, Jackie

ACTOR DRAMA
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Joel Edgerton, Loving
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences

ACTRESS - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Annette Bening, 20th Century Women
Lily Collins, Rules Don't Apply
Hailee Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
Stone's to lose? Most likely. I'll still be in Steinfeld's cheering section.

ACTOR - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Colin Farrell, The Lobster
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill, War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool
Happy for Hugh Grant. Florence Foster Jenkins isn't great, but he's delightful in it.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Nicole Kidman, Lion
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Octavia Spencer filling the fifth slot this time, but it feels like the Academy could surprise here. Maybe to the tune of Lily Gladstone?

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg, Florence Foster Jenkins
Mahershara Ali, Moonlight
Dev Patel, Lion
Aaron Taylor Johnson, Nocturnal Animals
Don't get the nom for Johnson over Shannon. Get the nom for Helberg but don't agree with it. Patel as "Supporting" is just too outrageous. Only Ali and Bridges feel like they belong in here.

SCREENPLAY
La La Land
Nocturnal Animals
Moonlight
Manchester By The Sea
Hell Or High Water
Strong year for Original Screenplays. Less so for adaptations, but there were better ones out there than Nocturnal Animals: Arrival, Lion, Love and Friendship...

ANIMATED FEATURE
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
My Life As A Zucchini
Sing
Zootopia
HFPA usually has a hard time getting behind the foreign toons, but the bigger surprise is that they went for Zucchini over The Red Turtle.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Divines
Elle
Neruda
The Salesman
Toni Erdmann

ORIGINAL SCORE
Moonlight
La La Land
Arrival
Lion
Hidden Figures

ORIGINAL SONG
Cant Stop The Feeling, Trolls
City Of Stars, La La Land
Faith, Sing
Gold, Gold
How Far I’ll Go, Moana

  1. On that note, how DO you feel about Johnson's performance?

    1. Not hugely fond of it. I'll entertain arguments that the stylization of the performances in the novel storyline is by design, since that whole narrative is being filtered through Susan's perspective, but it's still too over-the-top for my liking.
