Awards-Nazi Award Nominations: Supporting Actor

There was a lot more to choose from in the supporting ranks than among the leading men this year. I could list my top twenty picks and still not have mentioned everyone worth mentioning. My picks for Best Supporting Actor:

KYLE CHANDLER in Carol
A lesser performer would turn Harge into a monochrome villain, but Chandler recognizes the truth in Carol's assertion, “we're not ugly people”. He shows us a man acting out of hurt, and feeling the shame.

BENICIO DEL TORO in Sicario
Silently intense as ever, Del Toro's threatening presence draws out long and slowly like blade. His underacting is easily more unnerving than villainous grandstanding could ever be.

MICHAEL KEATON in Spotlight
Vulgar as it is to try and single anybody out of Spotlight's perfect ensemble, Keaton earns my vote with his subtle embodiment of guilt and remorse. A lesson in actorly reserve from a brilliant veteran.

MARK RYLANCE in Bridge of Spies
Dry and impossibly calm under pressure, Rylance's turn as a spy being tried for just doing his job is also quietly humanistic, finding emotional grace notes and underplaying them expertly.

SYLVESTER STALLONE in Creed
Who could have guessed that Stallone's seventh outing as the iconic Balboa would yield the most textured performance of his career, exuding a lifetime of wisdom and regret through internalized swagger.

Other strong considerations:
John Cena in Trainwreck
Emory Cohen in Brooklyn
Brendan Gleeson in Suffragette
Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina
Liev Schreiber in Spotlight

  1. Lol so weird to see John Cena in the "Just Missed" category.

    1. He's a riot in Trainwreck. Easily my favourite part of that movie and in only a few scenes.

    2. I don't blame it. Still weird considering he's in so few scenes and he's a wrestler. Usually wrestlers-turned-actors aren't that good. But good for him.
