Godzilla Stepped On by VES Snub

I was expecting this announcement to drop tomorrow, but instead we get a third guild announcement of the day. The biggest thing to note with the Visual Effects Society's list of nominees is the absence of Godzilla... in EVERY category. WTF? Is this effects house politics at play, or a larger bias rearing its head? Remember Pacific Rim. Maybe monsters just aren't in vogue.
Barring a shocking Oscar snub, I'd say this is Interstellar's to lose, but I sure do hope the guild spreads the wealth. There was a lot of excellent effects work this year.

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Interstellar
Maleficent
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Wow. SIX nominees instead of the usual five, and not one of them is Godzilla. The rest of these are on the Oscar shortlist. Maleficent will probably miss, but could I be underestimating X-Men? They've never sprung for that series before. I'd guess Interstellar takes it, but it aught to be Apes.

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Divergent
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Unbroken
I dig the inclusion of Birdman and Grand Budapest, but whither Under the Skin? And in its place, The Imitation Game? Yuck. I would abstain from voting here in protest!

Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Rio 2
The Boxtrolls
The LEGO Movie
Now this be a competitive category. They all make a strong case for themselves. I'll guess The LEGO Movie.

Outstanding Performance of an Animated Character in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Caesar
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Koba
Guardians of the Galaxy - Rocket
Maleficent - Thistlewit
I gotta give this one to Rocket. Groot should be in here as well.

Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6 - Baymax
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - Hiccup
Rio 2 - Gabi
The Boxtrolls - Archibald Snatcher
Baymax all the way.

Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Triskelion Headquarters
Interstellar - Tesseract
Lucy - Times Square
Noah - Antediluvian Earth
Noah would make a good winner here, but I have to throw my support behind Interstellar's uber-cool tesseract.

Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6 - Into the Portal
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - Oasis
The Book of Life - Magical Land of the Remembered
The Boxtrolls - Boxtroll Cavern
Dragons 2 if I'm picking this one, but roll a four-sided die.

Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal/Live Action Motion Media Project
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Edge of Tomorrow - Beach and Paris Attacks
Interstellar - Tesseract
X-Men: Days of Future Past - Kitchen Scene
Here's where Birdman's flying sequences should have been recognized, but I'll go with Edge of Tomorrow.

Outstanding Models in any Motion Media Project
Big Hero 6 - City of San Fransokyo
The Boxtrolls - Mecha-Drill
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - Laketown
Transformers: Age of Extinction - Knightship
The Hobbit or The Boxtrolls surely deserve this.

Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Helicarrier Broadside and Crash
Edge of Tomorrow - Destruction and Sand
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
X-Men: Days of Future Past - Quicksilver Pentagon Kitchen
I'd give my vote to Captain America for this one, but maybe X-Men will pull it out.

Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - The Battle
The Boxtrolls
The LEGO Movie
Gotta go with Dragons 2 again.

  1. I perdonally think that Godzilla's dark dark palette drove them away.

  2. I would not mind a nom for X-Men in 2 days. I was never a massive fan of the franchise but Days of Future Past was easily the strongest in the series.

  3. They weren't bad, but I wouldn't quite consider 'Godzilla' one of the year's best in visual effects. They were good, not really amazing.
